Breaking down the cost of the Canadian Surface Combatant

$26 billion for Canada’s new, semi-recycled warship. Can you tell it’s an election year?

Ottawa Citizen

The Department of National Defence has broken down the cost of the $26 billion it estimates it will need to build the Canadian Surface Combatant. The $26 billion is the Treasury Board approved price-tag. Here is the rundown of the costs, according to DND documents obtained by Defence Watch.

Acquisition: $22.16 billion

Cost to run project management office: $366 million

Contingency funds: 3.67 billion

I have an article in today’s Citizen about the option of stripping off parts from the Halifax-class and Iroquois-class ships for the CSC. There are 12 Halifax-class ships to take parts from if that option is considered. Three “donor” Iroquois-class ships could also potentially be available. The fourth, HMCS Huron, was sunk in 2007.
