GiveSendGo #TruckerConvoy2022 Fundraiser Hack

To be clear, this is different from the GiveSendGo leak, reported earlier by Mikael Thalen, who has been all over this story from the word Go. Or GiveSendGo anyway.

To recap: a group of roughly 150 big rig trucks and somewhere over 200 personal vehicles has been “occupying” downtown Ottawa for three weeks now. This hasn’t made much of a dent in the way Ottawa itself works, as most government workers outside of those who actually work in the Parliament buildings work at Tunney’s Pasture and other locations where the real estate is cheaper and less historic. It is not, however, delightful to gaze upon or listen to.

Confederate flag out of shot
Occupiers fly the swastika and gadsden flags in downtown Ottawa, along with the somewhat more popular F*ck Trudeau and Canadian flags.

It IS annoying for downtown residents, some of whom endured an attempt by convoyageurs to trap them in an apartment building and set it aflame.

Downtown is also the location for many homeless people, some of whom have been beaten or had their food stolen by convoyistes.

And also home to Happy Goat, a beloved local coffee chain. This is how it’s going for them.

On the surface, this purports to be a working class uprising. Truckers are working class, right? Well, sure, but so are baristas, and I’d bet there are quite a lot more than 150 baristas in downtown Ottawa.

As for the cops, well…

Anyhoodle, their first fundraiser was set up on GoFundMe by Tamara Lich, secretary of the Maverick Party, a Wexit party that supports nationhood for Alberta. Ironically, that would mean anyone leaving Alberta would have to be fully vaccinated; there’s no way out of that landlocked province except through Canada or the US. And it eventually reached $10,000,000CDN, including many large donations (the largest from a gun range in Langley, BC) despite Canadian political donation laws setting a ceiling of $3,000.

But illogical policy positions and sketchy party funding aside, Ms Lich set up the GoFundMe, which asked (among other things) for $2000 per participating truck, for fuel and supplies. A few days into the convoy, organizers clarified in writing that no participating truckers should expect any financial support. This clearly made the fundraiser in violation of GoFundMe’s policies, and it was frozen: money could be donated, but not withdrawn. Later, after investigations by GoFundMe cooperating with law enforcement, the entire $10 million fundraiser was shut down.

The convoy campaign, organized by a previously obscure Canadian group, now ranks as the eighth-largest in GoFundMe’s 12-year history. It joins the pantheon of fundraisers supporting the family of George Floyd, victims of the Parkland (Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and Pulse shootings, Time’s Up (related to #MeToo) and major American COVID-19 relief projects.

The irregularities of this campaign are a five-alarm fire.

Sandy Garossino, National Observer

Lich responded by requesting funds be sent directly to her Protonmail email address, which undoubtedly absolutely made the day of some Canada Revenue Agency income tax auditor in Tunney’s Pasture. Happy hunting, comrade! Yeah, she dropped that line pretty quickly.

Enter newly-minted and completely authentic working class Canadian Patriot Michael Flynn.

That’s GENERAL Michael Flynn, y’all.

Fully pardoned General Michael Flynn, that is.

Flynn’s suggestion at a conference last May that a Myanmar-style military coup “should happen” in the United States led Representative Elaine Luria, a moderate Democrat from Virginia and former Navy commander, to argue that Flynn should be tried for sedition under the Uniform Code of Military Justice…

“It’s a challenge to call out a grifter,” J. D. Rucker mused, “because usually they have a very passionate, cultlike following. And sometimes we get this situation where we have these multiple grifters going after each other. It’s entertaining, but it’s also dangerous for everybody involved.”

New York Times

We can also call him Donor #26 to the GiveSendGo fundraiser that was set up by convoy organizers to replace the GoFundMe. GiveSendGo was created as a right-wing alternative to more mainstream platforms which comply with warrants, decline to raise funds for hate speech, and the like.

A hundred dollars. A hundred bucks. Mike, Mike, Mike, are times that tough chez vous? I hear there are some good trucking jobs going begging these days. Of course, you’ve got to be fully vaxed and okay with admitting it. I’m unsure of Flynn’s vaccination status, but can almost guarantee that he won’t toss your salad. Don’t ask him.

But there were SOME Canadians, never fear. Like Aaron Oosterhoff, brother of perpetually-embattled, anti-choice Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara. Rather troubling that he’s got a fairly significant role on the Committee for Emergency Management Oversight, eh?

Actually his brother.

And some random Americans. This tweet wins the internet for the entire insurrection, if you axe me, which I will note you did not. How satisfying is this?

As you can tell by now, GiveSendGo, like many alt-right tech platforms, failed to benefit from robust security and essentially spewed its guts all over the internet. Its guts being, specifically, the roughly 92,000 donors listed in its database. Initially the leak appeared to contain only data belonging to creators of various fundraisers, but tonight the entire list of donors to the convoy was leaked. But first, traffic to the site was redirected to a new URL GiveSendGone.wtf where visitors were treated to an amusing video featuring…is it Elsa? The blonde one from Frozen (I have no children, I dunno her) riding a horse and singing, and of course that has nothing to do with hacking vast right-wing conspiracies, so the juxtaposition is bonus points. The redirect was swiftly corrected, alas.

Now, I suck at interpreting spreadsheets, but as far as I can make out this is the list of all donors to the trucker convoy fundraiser, from the piddling $100 from Michael Flynn to the rather impressive $90,000 from tech billionaire Thomas M. Siebel. American tech billionaire Thomas M. Siebel. In fact, of donors, a solid majority are American. And so is the bulk of the money.

There are some interesting political connections to right wing parties as well.

Assuming it’s not been taken down, you can read the entire list in this Google spreadsheet (edited: had to remove the link, it’s not loading at all now and was throwing up dangerous popup ads; will replace with a safe mirror later. Researchers and journalists can contact DDoSecrets for a safe copy of the entire list.). It’ll take awhile to open, with 92000 lines and the world’s attention on it. Took me about half an hour because of the traffic. You’d think Google could handle it! And Twitter has already banned the link: Facebook is no doubt not far behind.

And released at the same time, but garnering fewer than 300 views, was a video on YouTube featuring song and video from Frozen (you know the song) with some text scrolling over top of it.

Now, copyrighted material is something YouTube does not want to see from anyone but the copyright holder, and Disney (aka Mousewitz) is particularly uh, forceful about protecting its copyright, so it was clear the video would not be long for this world. And indeed it was not, as it was taken down within two hours of my finding it. Fewer than three hundred people had watched it.

And what was the text, you ask? Well, funny you should ask.

Here, presented in its entirety is the text of the video shared by the alleged but in my professional (and it IS my professsion) opinion actual hacker or at least member of hacker crew or designated PR hacker eg t0piary released on YouTube. I’ll add my thoughts in coloured text and pray to god I never change the background of this blog, lest my thoughts be lost forever.

*existential pause*

Okay, here goes. Typos and all.

Anonymous to the rescue! It’s just like the good old days!

Attention GiveSendGo grifters and hatriots

The Canadian government has informed you that the money you assholes raised to fund an insurrection is frozen

TD Bank has frozen several accounts

You helped fund the January 6th insurrection in the US

You helped fund an insurrection in Ottawa

In fact, you are committed to funding anything that keeps the raging fire of misinformation going until that it burns the world’s collective democracies down

On behalf of sane people worldwide who wish to continue living in a democracy, I am now telling you that

GIVESENDGO ITSELF IS FROZEN

A convoy of trucks to protest vaccine requirements?

The leaders of this “movement” are known extremists who publicly stated that they want to overthrow the government. They held a city hostage for weeks while terrorizing the peaceful citizens who live there.

This is all literally true. They sent a memo of understanding to the Governor General, demanding that she dissolve Parliament and form a new government with them.

That said, a few other things strike me. This reads like it was written by law enforcement. Specifically, it reads like it was written by American law enforcement. I know a lot of activists and they range from anarchists to fascists, but I don’t know any Democracy Hacker Crews except the ones who work for democratic governments. I’ve seen the FBI pull off a few of these kinds of things in the past, so I’m sure they’re capable, given the fundamental shoddy nature of the site. Whoever wrote this has an international perspective, is pro-democratic and keenly aware of the threats against democracy which, honestly, most people still are not, has or is associated with people who have proper hacking skills AND an old-skool lulzy perspective, as the video and domain redirect are extremely lulzy. This isn’t a 15 year old; this is a grown up.

Trucker convoys are now either taking place or being planned all over the world. Has anyone really thought about how dangerous this is, especially during these times?

Governments and law enforcement need to consider the possibility that some of these folks may not simply be ordinary truckers who are fed up with masks and vaccine mandates.

In December, 2021, several Uhaul trucks full of extremists from the group known as “Patriot Front” that arrived in Washington, DC to protest. Yes, it did end up being peaceful. That being said, it shows that large extremist groups CAN show up in trucks and recent history should remind us that their intentions aren’t always peaceful.

More of that awareness and a strategic mindset, a military mindset in fact.

The possibility that a convoy movement like this could be a cover for a type of trojan horse attack where extremists and militia groups may arrive in large numbers with weapons. Large convoys of trucks moving in capital cities will look normal given the theme of these worldwide protests. Hopefully most of them will be peaceful, but given the political division in the United States as well as high tensions between Russia and NATO the probability of such an attack is considerable.

Finally, I’ll clarify the goals behind this shutdown of GiveSendGo, which will likely be temporary. GiveSendGo has a history of providing a platform for individuals and organized groups to fund hate groups, promote disinformation and insurrection disguised as “protests” Most of their larger campaigns are, in some way, a continuing threat to democracy.

Foreign money being used to sponsor efforts to destabilize government(s) by co-opting commonly held grievances stemming from pandemic fatigue is a very serious matter.

Sadly, GiveSendGo will restore their systems and continue operating. Also, there is lots of talk about using cryptocurrency and NFTs are an emerging threat to be considered. The data from this breach data will be provided in its entirety to researchers and journalists so that the impact of foreign political interference can be better understood and sensible, informed policy decisions can be made to defend against this growing threat.

DETAILS WILL SOON FOLLOW

AND NOW A MOMENT TO RECOGNIZE THE MOST GENEROUS SPONSORS

Now this is the fun part. Note how the crimes by Americans are in ALL CAPS whereas the crimes by Canadians are not? That’s what makes me pretty sure this document was prepared by an American. An American who CARES a LOT about crimes by Americans. I could be wrong, but if so, I’ll live with it.

Another fun thing is noting all the money contributed by Americans to this completely spontaneous and authentic Canadian working class protest. And one thing that moderately weirds me out: what’s up with all the posh, bougie farmer types donating tens of thousands of dollars? Shouldn’t they be off milking goats and brewing kombucha for the farmer’s market?

Anyhoodle, enjoy. I hope you have popcorn. I have literally met one of these people in real life. Maybe you have too, because unlike most of the “Canadian patriots” on Twitter, these ones really exist.

The Fucker Convoy just can’t win. GoFundMe frozen, then taken down. Protonmail workaround turned out to be a terrible idea. GiveSendGo fundraiser? Hacked to oblivion and leaked to the world, along with a lulzy video that I transcribed in full here. Enjoy.
