A threat from ISIL prompted India to block Github and 31 other sites

That should work out well. Half the developers on Github live in India.

To be clear, even a direct, viral threat from ISIS would be no justification for blocking these sites, which include the Internet Archive, Github, and Pastebin. The Internet Archive’s mission is to keep a record of everything posted on the web; that history is now unavailable to Indians. Github is the open source developer’s workspace, where others can view and play with their code. Without that resource, India is an island of people communicating in the dark via email and, if they’re lucky, bumping in to one another at the mall. Pastebin is a realtime resource of news, code, doxes, petty dramas, and tipoffs that is where the news that appears on Twitter comes from.
