The government of the Ukraine has released what it says are recordings from tapped phones, recordings of rebel, pro-Russian militants calling their leaders in Russia itself, taking responsibility for downing Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.
The plane crashed yesterday near the border of Ukraine/Russia and had been travelling over a disputed zone, although at an altitude which was internationally recognized to be off-limits to acts of war. It’s a busy corridor, taken routinely by all major airlines, although Air Canada and Delta had previously stated they would not fly over the disputed zone. “This route had been closed by the Ukrainian authorities from ground to flight level 320 [32,000 feet] but was open at the level at which the aircraft was flying,” said a spokesperson for Eurocontrol, the coordinating agency for air traffic controllers in Europe.
