Crisis at the State Department: an Op/Ed by Joe Fionda

This is Strike Two.

Daniel Rosen, U.S. State Department Counterterrorism Director of Policy & Planning, was arrested three weeks ago for sexual solicitation of a 14 year old girl. He has again been arrested. This time, Rosen was charged in the District of Columbia with installing secret Peeping Tom cameras and making videos of women undressing in their homes without their consent. A search of his phone after his first arrest uncovered the existence of those videos. Amazingly, he was allowed to go home under house arrest with a monitoring bracelet.

The D.C. political establishment of careerist beltway pundits and terrorism experts seem oddly silent about this matter, which in reality is an utterly catastrophic gutting of the credibility (or whats left) of this government. Daniel Rosen holds a critically important position in the so called “National Security” apparatus, which includes budgeting ($300 million budget supervision) for projects to counter violent extremism, directed specifically at keeping people from joining ISIS.

His position is certainly a jet-setting one that takes him to many different locations. In terms of the psychopathology of illegal sexual degeneracy, his position is one that would afford him many opportunities to abuse and victimize, and give him power enough to use to cover up and intimidate those victims into silence.

Obviously, that such a person was able to ascend to such a sensitive position of government seemingly undetected should greatly concern everyone, as the system that screens personnel to keep degenerate predators like Rosen out clearly failed beyond any measure. There are, as well, those 1700 dropped child porn investigations at the Pentagon, and dozens of other government officials across the country convicted of child sex offenses. But before being able to address HR vetting processes, two very big questions must be asked:

Did Rosen physically abuse any children?

Who the fuck else knew about it?

Rosen doesn’t strike me as the sort of guy that could have got into such a position of power in government by being oblivious to the law, opsec illiterate, or just plain stupid. This would lead me to doubt that this was the first time he tried to solicit underage girls, or that this was some sort of one-off.

Rosen also has an incredible amount of access to other world leaders and governments, but just like any average person in an age of smartphone supercomputers, he too is susceptible to hacking and social engineering no matter how powerful he thinks he is. Could foreign intelligence services, criminal gangs, or even ISIS have targeted Rosen and discovered this? Absofuckinglutely. Knowing that a foreign counterpart or an enemy is into illicit sexual activities strikes me as the sort of information a foreign government, criminal group or an individual actor would want to use as leverage, blackmail or subversion against the target. As the State Department’s counterterrorism moneyman he’s probably the highest value target of the outward face of America’s foreign policy, the repercussions from his behavior will have serious fallout in ways we cannot yet imagine.

So, has he in fact been targeted, blackmailed, extorted, turned? We’ll have to wait for the screen caps. Welcome to Washington in 2015.
